10th February - Archaeology at Bestwell Quarry - Lillian Laddle.
This paper described how a local amateur archaeologist became caught up in the investigation of a major sand & gravel site in Dorset. After being coached by staff from the local unit Lillian and her team of nearly 200 carried out investigations from 1992 to present day and went on to discover the secrets of the site.
Artefacts were found from Neolithic, Middle Stone Age, Bronze Age and Roman periods including a large kiln and two hoards of 1,600 coins dating back to 272AD.
Lillian explained that has been the largest volunteer project in Britain so far and has just one more season to completion. The team has won three Dorset Archaeology Awards and in January 2003 was awarded a British Archaeology Award. She was also proud to announce that English Heritage had just announced that funding would now be made available from the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund to ensure completion of the work and publication of the findings. This will include a mobile exhibition and a website at www.bestwell.co.uk.
