11th December 2006 - Members Paper Evening

On the 11th December 2006 the Branch held it's final technical evening of the 2006 programme at the Mendip House Hotel, Frome.

It was the Members Paper Evening. As ever this evening is always one of the most popular, and was well attended. Three excellent papers were delivered:

Suzy Offord - "Greetings Earthlings! We come in peace"
Based on Eysey Manor Quarry in the Cotswolds, which focussed on community engagement at it's best.

Andy Shakeshaft - "Whatley Quarry Dewatering and Augmentation Scheme"
Based on the site specific project, it's background, design, implementation and environmental and operational benefits gained.

Val Raydon - "Drugs and Alcohol in the Workplace"
Based on raising awareness of site managers, the need for policy, identifying all the various kinds of drugs and alcohol and possible schemes to combat the problems we face.

It was left to a selected panel of judges to decide on the results, and following much deliberation concluded that all three papers were excellently prepared and delivered.

It was also pointed out that this evening in particular is about taking part in having an opportunity to speak in front of an audience of your peers which can be somewhat frightening to those who do not do it on a regular basis. It is a personal development skill and all three participants were congratulated on their efforts.

The results were

1st - Suzy Offord, receiving the Exxon Mobil award
2nd - Val Raydon, receiving the Vic Caulicott award
3rd - Andy Shakeshaft receiving the branch award

The vote of thanks was then duly given by Steve Cole.

Andy Shakeshaft (West of England Branch Committee member)
