22nd January 2007 - Annual General Meeting

The annual general meeting of the WoE branch was held on Monday 22 January 2007 at the Holiday Inn, Filton. The well attended meeting heard outgoing chairman Kevin Sargant give a concise report on the branch activities and formally thanked the committee and members for their support throughout his term of office. Honorary secretary and treasurer Peter Barkwill presented the financial report followed by Steve Cole who gave the Council representatives report.

Andrew Shakeshaft was elected as Chairman and will be assisted by Val Raydon as Vice-Chairman.

Following the AGM, members and guests sat down to a supper. The evening's activities concluded with a fascinating illustrated talk by Stephen Clews, the Roman Baths and Pump Room Manager, titled 'Stewing Alive - The Springs of Bath'.

He outlined its history from the 3rd Century right up to the present day, and how it had influenced the growth of Bath itself. He explained the various treatments offered over the years including the drinking of water 'enriched' with radium, which was still being promoted as late as the 1950's.

He concluded by describing the new Bath Spa, which now offers special treatments for the 21st century's biggest disease - stress.
