19th January - Annual General Meeting.

The annual general meeting of the WoE branch was held on Monday 19 January 2009 at the Holiday Inn, Filton. The well-attended meeting heard outgoing Chairman Andrew Shakeshaft give a concise report on the branch activities and formally thank the committee and members for their support throughout his term of office. He then handed over to the new Chair, Val Raydon. Honorary secretary and treasurer Peter Barkwill presented the financial report followed by Steve Cole who gave the Council representatives report. The election of committee members then took place. Full details of those names will be available shortly on the WOE website.

Following the AGM, over fifty members and guests sat down to a supper. The evening's activities concluded with a fascinating talk by John Tweed, the chief executive of the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. He was involved in the preparation of the bid to hold the 2012 Olympic games in London. He began with a short film showing the sailing events at the Beijing Olympics. He outlined how the sailing events in Weymouth and Portland would be a worthy successor to those Games. This location provides possibly the best small boat sailing in the world against the backdrop of a world heritage coast.

John explained how the acquisition of the Royal Naval Air Station at Portland had provided the opportunity to build a world class sailing facility. He described how local businesses and the community would benefit from the games. He emphasised the importance of leaving a good legacy as demanded by the International Sailing Federation.

John concluded his talk by explaining the purpose of the Chesil Trust, a charity that provides opportunities for young and disabled people to get involved in sailing activities.

Following a lively question and answer session, Steve Cole gave the vote of thanks for a highly entertaining, informative and enjoyable talk by a very accomplished speaker.
