12th December 2005 - Members Paper Evening

On the 12th December 2005 the Branch held it's Members Paper Evening at the Frome Rugby Club.

This years presentations included,

  • The New Development Plan System, by Chris Herbert, SLR Consulting Ltd
  • A Young Persons Perspective of our Industry, by Amie Coppin, Aggregate Industries
  • Managing Absenteeism, by Andy Shakeshaft & Val Raydon, Hanson and Aggregate Industries respectively
  • Each presentation was given to an attentive audience, followed by questions and answers.

The number of questions and debating topics for each paper gave an indication of the quality delivered.

Following this it was down to the panel of judges led by Eric Cash to make the awards.

In 3rd place receiving the Branch award was Chris Herbert, 2nd was Andy Shakeshaft and Val Raydon who received the Vic Caulicott award and in 1St was Aime Coppin who received the Exxonmobil award. This was an exceptional achievement as it was her first opportunity to speak in public to an audience of her peers.

Aime's presentation was well put together and gave an interesting but true report on how the industry appears to an new person coming in. It appears that we don't always give a good account of ourselves in promoting what we have to offer people as an industry. This really echoed in the minds of the branch members and committee who have focused very much on this issue throughout the last few years. Efforts to create an improved interface between the industry, encouragement of young people to join our industry has been one of our hot topics.

A vote of thanks was given by the chairman Kevin Sargent, who complimented all the speakers.
